Are Virtual Reality Headsets Worth It?
Virtual Reality has been around for a short while but the technology seems to be otherworldly and peripheral.
If you have tried on an Oculus headset, then you can attest to the fact that it was a mind blowing experience. But the question still remains, is investing in VR headsets really worth it?
Well, here are a few things that you should consider s you think about your decision to invest in VR headsets or not.
- The VR market is in good health
Unlike other technologies whose sales may be faltering, VR sales are not. This gives you the confidence that developers will continue to make games for major platforms. In addition, you are assured that the technology will not be abandoned any time soon. As a matter of fact, market predictions show that VR is set to grow by 50% in this year alone. Why?
- Steadily decreasing prices
- More available choices of headsets
- Big sales of smartphone headsets
- Higher mobile VR sales
- You can get a good VR headset for $200-$400
You read it right! The price of virtual reality headsets has significantly gone down. Can you imagine that the original consumer version of the Oculus Rift cost whooping $599? That’s not all. The controllers alone were priced at $199. So in recent times, you had to spend $798 to get a VR headset. At the moment, you can get both the Oculus Rift and the controllers at only $399 and even $349 on Amazon. The price is still high but when you compare it to the original prices, you are getting a much better deal. Furthermore, the lower pricing does not mean a depreciation in quality. On the contrary, the technology keeps getting better and better. You will not be spending your money on headsets that will not last.
If that’s not convincing enough, then this is: Microsoft has sold bundles of a headset and controllers at just $199. Isn’t that compelling enough?
- Standalone VR headsets at only $200 are here
Currently, standard VR headsets must be connected to a PC through a cable. This means that you must have a PC with powerful enough graphics hardware to drive the headset. Moreover, you will need to set up tracking stations to track the movement of your head and controllers. First, not everyone has the kind of hardware required. Second, the whole process of setting up is quite exhausting.
The good news is that this is all about to change. Companies are now investing in manufacturing standalone headsets such as the Oculus Go, 2018 version. The standalone headsets are less expensive and more accessible to everyone. For instance, the Oculus Go only costs $199. With the standalone headsets, you will no longer need PC connections and complex hardware.
All these reasons are compelling enough for you to realize that investing in VR headsets is actually worth it. The technology is in itself impeccable. Even though there are still not enough games, the tech is still worth it.
